The facilities in this map feature represent stationary sources of air pollution that are regulated by the EPA along with state of Florida and local air pollution control agencies. Examples of "air emission facilities" include electric power plants, factories, universities and many smaller operations such as drycleaners. The type and volume of air pollution emitted varies for each facility.
Facilities which emit some sort of air pollution are quite common in Florida. However, the majority of these facilities are relatively small pollution emitters such as dry cleaning or auto-repair shops which most homeowners don't worry about. Nevertheless if you or your family is affected by certain lung conditions such as asthma, this information can be useful for pointing out some of the sources of air pollution in your community. Note that while most people would agree that it's better to live father away from a source of air pollution rather than right next door to one, proximity to stationary pollution sources like those shown on this map does not necessarily indicate how good or bad you're air quality will be. Air pollution naturally disperses (and does so fairly quickly); it is also carried by the wind and air currents. So no matter where you live, you will experience some daily variation in air quality due to weather conditions and other factors. Air currents can concentrate pollutants in some regions while removing them from others. Mobile sources of pollution (such as cars) also have an impact on day to day air quality.
Please note that a business's/organization's presence on this map does not imply that they have done anything wrong or that they have violated the law in some way. A business/organization's presence on this map only indicates that they have been granted a permit to release air pollution by the EPA.
